The Sasol Solar Challenge is an eight-day endurance challenge where solar car teams from across the world design, build and compete on South African public roads from Johannesburg to Cape Town to put their engineering skills to the test. Top teams can cover over 4000+ km over the course of the eight-day challenge with their vehicles being powered solely by the sun.

At the Sasol Solar Challenge engineering meets innovation and students from all fields of study contribute to create a well-rounded team including mechanical, electrical, chemical engineers, marketing students, finance students and business management students to name a few.

The aim of the challenge is to see which team can rack up the most kilometres by completing set daily stages with additional opportunities to add to their total daily distances by completing additional loops. This format creates the opportunity to challenge the teams in their strategic approach to each day, teamwork as well as dealing with unplanned scenarios and challenges that may arise.
